Hello again! Sorry we have been quiet a while, we have to so some work sometimes

We have been making a determined effort to gain some clients closer to our local head office in Yorkshire. We have PAT testing clients all over the UK from Scotland and Wales to central London and the midlands etc We don’t however have a huge customer base in Yorkshire, it is strange and we believe due to the high volume of very large PAT testing firms operating out of the region. We have been trying to market towards this and drive our costs down as tightly as we can. We hope the dedicated specialist service we offer will shine through and get us some more PAT testing clients in Hull. We hope to be able to confirm some bookings as such based on this

On our a more personal note, it is now the school holidays and all us parents will know this means a summer of wonderful time with our children. Or perhaps more time telling them to get off the xbox and get outside, or to tidy up after themselves I just wanted to say enjoy the summer everyone and dont forget your PAT testing! I also get asked this so I thought I would put a little bog out there about it!

The procedure for PAT testing should be firstly have a look around your office, has it been PAT tested before? If so when? Do you have prior testing reports? You should then approach your insurance company and ask for their requirements on PAT testing, do they have it in your policy for annual PAT testing? Do they need copies of certificates? If possible seek the advice of your local HSE inspector, take their input on frequency of testing, recommended programmes, direction to appropriate literature and documents.

After that you should be looking for some dedicated PAT testing advice from a firm like Power Sonic Ltd ask them for a quote! You will be asked initially what sort of equipment you have for PAT testing, the type of location the equipment type, your location and an approximate testing quantity among other things.

Make sure the price you are given includes the report pack and certificate, minor repairs and the actual testing Make sure no extra’s for travel are going to be charged and see if extra fee’s are added for out of office hours PAT testing.

Once you have chosen  a PAT testing firm ask to see insurance documents and terms of business, make sure they are acceptable to your business.

The PAT testing firm should perform a full risk assessment for its and your staff whilst the work is to be carried out. Make plans for work dates, times and access to the building. If you have secure area’s make sure you have people available for escorts etc.

Once all the preparation work is complete the actual inspection and testing can begin

Your PAT testing engineers should report to a site contact prior to the work and arrange access to various parts of the building agreeing on work plans. You can then let them do what they do best, PAT test! This will involve working around your business PAT testing work stations, kitchens, offices etc. This will involve a full power down of the appliance for a formal visual inspection prior to the testing. Most faults are pulled up on the formal visual inspection, it involves opening up non moulded plugs, fully checking outer casing of plugs/appliances, checking cables for damage etc etc. Once this has all passed (hopefully) the PAT test will be performed depending on the type of equipment and its electrical design. Class 1 equipment will require an earth bond test and insulation resistance test plus a current leakage test. Class 2 equipment will require an insulation resistance test and a current leakage test. All appliances should also have a function test to make sure they work as they were intended to do so. The actual PAT test does not take very long with the primetest 300 test sets, more time will be spent on the visual inspection.

The results will be recorded in the test equipment and via paper backup and a label applied to the appliance to show a PASS or Fail status. The local user should be informed of the results and the appliance removed from use if it has failed.

Upon completion the lead engineer should discuss the results with a site contact and make any recommendations verbally. This will then be reflected in the engineers comments of your report pack.

The report pack will be generated along with your invoice and sent via pdf on email and via the post. You should check your report for any actions required and to obtain your certificate.

Your PAT testing firm will then advise future re-test periods and issue automatic reminders when they are due.
